Rajganj, 03 June (Siliguri Chronicle) – Tension gripped the area outside Rajganj Police Station on Tuesday as family members of a deceased minor girl, along with local residents, staged a protest demanding strict punishment for the accused and the arrest of his family members.

The protesters placed the girl’s body in front of the police station gate and later blocked the main road in Rajganj, causing major disruption to traffic for several hours.

According to sources, the Class IX student from Nabagram under Sannyasikata Gram Panchayat in Rajganj was reportedly in a relationship with a youth from the Sukhani Gram Panchayat area. Since the girl was a minor, both families had allegedly opposed their marriage.

Family members alleged that the youth later took the girl to his house, where she was allegedly forced to consume poison.

After falling ill, the girl was admitted to Jalpaiguri Super Speciality Hospital and later shifted to North Bengal Medical College and Hospital as her condition worsened. She died during treatment on Monday.

Following the post-mortem examination on Tuesday, the body was handed over to the family. Soon after, angry relatives and residents launched a protest outside the police station.

A large police contingent was deployed to control the situation. The Inspector-in-Charge (IC) of Rajganj Police Station held discussions with the protesters, following which the road blockade was withdrawn after police assured them that a proper investigation would be conducted and legal action taken based on the findings.

Police sources said the accused youth was arrested on Monday night. He was produced before the Jalpaiguri district court on Tuesday and remanded to police custody. The investigation is currently underway.
