Naxalbari, 03 June (Siliguri Chronicle) – A monkey that had spread panic across several areas of Naxalbari over the past four days was finally captured on Tuesday, bringing much-needed relief to local residents.
The monkey had reportedly attacked people in Rathkhola, Railgate, Station and Taltala areas, injuring several residents. According to Forest Department sources, a total of 11 people were injured in monkey attacks during the four-day period.
On Tuesday, four more people were allegedly bitten by the animal in the Taltala area, prompting authorities to step up efforts to capture it.
In response to the growing concern, personnel from the Tukriajhar Range launched a special operation from the morning to track the monkey. After several hours of search and monitoring, a team of veterinarians from Bengal Safari Park successfully tranquilised the animal using a dart gun.
The monkey was safely rescued and taken into custody. Forest Department officials said it would undergo a preliminary health examination and receive necessary treatment before being released into a deep forest area away from human habitation.
Residents expressed relief following the operation, saying they had been living in fear due to the repeated attacks over the past few days.
