Siliguri, 26 May (Siliguri Chronicle) – The case surrounding the suspicious death of school teacher Rita Sarkar in Siliguri has resurfaced once again, as her family renewed their demand for a fair and impartial investigation.
The family has appealed to the state government to reopen the case, alleging that justice has remained elusive even after eight years.
According to family members, Rita Sarkar was found hanging at her residence on February 18, 2017. During the investigation, police reportedly recovered a suicide note in which she allegedly named two local youth leaders linked to the Trinamool Congress, Mithun Das and Subir Saha, accusing them of being responsible for her death.
The note allegedly referred to repeated harassment, stalking and mental torture faced by the teacher during her daily commute. It further claimed that no action was taken against the accused because of political influence. Although both accused were arrested following the incident, they were later granted bail and the matter is still pending before the court.
Rita Sarkar’s mother alleged that the investigation conducted at the time was influenced by political pressure and claimed that the family has not received justice in the past eight years. She has now expressed hope for a fair and transparent probe into the matter.
The family is reportedly preparing to move court seeking reopening of the case. Meanwhile, BJP leaders have met the family and assured support in their fight for justice.
