Transformer Vandalised at Night in Kharibari, Irrigation to Farms Disrupted

Miscreants damaged an irrigation transformer in Kharibari overnight, stealing key components and stopping water supply to nearby agricultural fields.

Kharibari, January 27 (Siliguri Chronicle) – Miscreants vandalised a power transformer used for irrigation in the Pataram Jote agricultural fields of Kharibari during the night, bringing irrigation across nearly 10 acres of farmland to a standstill. The transformer, installed by the electricity department to supply power for irrigation, was damaged and several components were reportedly stolen.

Local farmer Nirmal Barman said irrigation was carried out on Monday evening, but the damage was discovered the next morning when the system failed to operate.

Following the incident, personnel from Kharibari police station and the electricity distribution department reached the spot to assess the situation. Officials said restoration of the power supply will take time due to the theft of essential equipment.

Kharibari Station Manager Biswajit Dutta said similar incidents have taken place in the area in the past, raising concerns over the security of irrigation infrastructure.
