Siliguri, 20 April (Siliguri Chronicle) – In the run-up to the elections, a section of civil society in Siliguri has called for preserving communal harmony, democratic traditions, and cultural values, while raising concerns over increasing intolerance and political polarisation.
On Monday, educationists, writers, and other public figures gathered in front of the Gandhi statue in the city. They voiced strong opposition to any form of propaganda that promotes division or communal hatred in the name of religion.
The group also urged the administration to ensure that citizens’ democratic rights are not compromised, particularly in the wake of heightened activity by central agencies and paramilitary forces.
Participants further stressed that election discourse should focus on core public issues such as livelihood, employment, education, and women’s safety, rather than identity-based or divisive politics.
