Bagdogra, 23 May (Siliguri Chronicle) – A trailer carrying stones and a parcel-loaded container collided head-on early Saturday morning on the Asian Highway near the Sanyasi Tea Garden area in Bagdogra, leaving the trailer driver seriously injured.
According to sources, the trailer was travelling from Bhutan towards Bihar, while the container was heading towards Siliguri. The two heavy vehicles reportedly crashed violently in the Sanyasi Tea Garden area.
The trailer driver suffered serious injuries in the accident. The collision also led to massive traffic disruption on the Asian Highway, triggering a long traffic jam in the area.
After receiving information, personnel from Bagdogra Police rushed to the spot and launched rescue and traffic clearance operations. Police worked for several hours to remove the damaged vehicles from the road, following which normal traffic movement was restored.
Sources said the container driver fled the scene after the accident. Preliminary police investigation suggests that the crash may have been caused due to drowsy driving.
