Jalpaiguri, July 15 (Siliguri Chronicle) – A youth from a neighbouring village allegedly attacked a family in the Dhupguri block of Jalpaiguri district on Sunday night, injuring six people, after he was asked to stop contacting a girl from the family.
According to sources, the youth had been repeatedly calling and proposing to the girl over the past few months. When her family became aware of the situation, they warned him to stay away and stop calling her. The incident took a violent turn after the confrontation.
“Even the youth’s family members were told to tell him to stop calling her,” said a relative of the girl.
This angered the youth, and on Sunday night, he entered the girl’s house armed with a dagger.
“He attacked her family members and indiscriminately hacked them with the dagger. The girl was also injured. As a neighbour rushed to help the family, he too was attacked,” the relative added.
The youth fled the scene after the attack.
Residents took the injured to the subdivisional hospital in Dhupguri. Later, three of them, including the girl, were referred to the Jalpaiguri Government Medical College & Hospital.
As news of the incident spread, a team from Dhupguri police station reached the village. Police launched a search for the accused and soon arrested him.
On Monday, some villagers from the girl’s area staged a protest at the police station, demanding strict punishment for the youth.
“A case has been registered. The youth has been arrested, and an investigation is in progress,” said a police officer.
