Bangladeshi National Arrested at Panitanki Border with Expired Visa

A Bangladeshi national was arrested at the Panitanki border after SSB found his visa had expired; police are investigating possible links to a tout network.

Kharibari, 04 June (Siliguri Chronicle) – A Bangladeshi national was arrested in the Panitanki Indo-Nepal border area under Kharibari Police Station for allegedly attempting to enter India using an expired visa.

According to sources, personnel of the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) detained the man during routine patrolling after becoming suspicious of his movements. Upon verification of his documents, officials found that his visa had expired a long time ago. He was subsequently handed over to Kharibari Police Station, where he was arrested following a complaint lodged by the SSB.

The accused has been identified as Mohammad Muktar Hossain, a resident of Nawabganj in Dhaka district of Bangladesh.

Police sources said Hossain had legally entered India in 2023 on a valid visa. However, after the visa expired while he was staying in Kolkata, he allegedly travelled to Nepal with the assistance of a tout network.

During questioning, the accused reportedly told investigators that he tried to re-enter India through the border after learning about recent efforts by authorities to identify, monitor, and deport illegal infiltrators in the state.

The accused is scheduled to be produced before the Siliguri Sub-Divisional Court. Kharibari Police have initiated an investigation into the case.
