Rajganj, 22 May (Siliguri Chronicle) – Belakoba Gram Panchayat Pradhan Purnima Roy on Friday resigned from her post and claimed that she had severed all ties with the Trinamool Congress (TMC), triggering fresh political speculation in the area.
Roy reached the Jalpaiguri Sadar BDO office on Friday afternoon and submitted her resignation to BDO Biplab Kumar Biswas. She was accompanied by her husband, Amar Roy.
After coming out of the office, Roy levelled several allegations, while her husband claimed that she had earlier been abducted and forced to switch from the BJP to the TMC.
In the 2023 panchayat elections, the 29-seat Belakoba Gram Panchayat had witnessed a close contest, with the BJP winning 15 seats, the TMC securing 12, and Independents taking two seats. Purnima Roy had won her seat as a BJP candidate.
According to allegations made by her family, Roy was later forced to join the TMC as part of efforts to gain control of the gram panchayat. Following the shift in political equations, she was appointed as the pradhan.
Her resignation has now fuelled speculation over a possible return to the BJP. However, district BJP leaders said that no decision regarding her rejoining the party would be considered at this stage.
