Rajganj, 26 March (Siliguri Chronicle) – Discontent has surfaced within the Bharatiya Janata Party in Rajganj over its choice of candidate for the upcoming Assembly elections, with party workers and supporters staging protests and demanding a replacement.
The unrest began after the party released its third list of candidates, naming Dinesh Sarkar, also known as Haradhan Sarkar, as its nominee for the Rajganj Assembly seat. The announcement triggered immediate dissatisfaction among sections of the party’s local unit.
On Thursday, protests broke out in the Bagdogra area, where agitating workers and supporters said they would not accept the declared candidate. They called on the party leadership to make an immediate change, warning that the controversy could impact the party’s electoral prospects.
During the demonstration, protesters also demanded that the ticket be given to a candidate from the Rajbanshi community. Anger was directed at BJP state secretary and former Jalpaiguri district president Bapi Goswami, who was accused by some of influencing the candidate selection process.
The development has brought internal divisions within the party to the fore at a crucial time ahead of the elections.
