Rajganj, 21 March (Siliguri Chronicle) – The absence of four-time MLA Khageswar Roy from a workers’ meeting held in support of Swapna Barman has sparked political discussion in Belakoba.
The meeting took place on Saturday at Harimandir in Belakoba and was organised by Krishna Das, coordinator of the Rajganj Assembly constituency and Trinamool Congress candidate from Jalpaiguri Sadar. While leaders from various blocks and regions attended, Roy’s absence drew attention.
Several other leaders were also not present, including Rajganj block president Arindam Banerjee, Sarbani Dhara, and Panchayat Samiti president Rupali Dey Sarkar. Their absence has led to speculation in local political circles.
Responding to the developments, Krishna Das downplayed the concerns, stating that representatives from all blocks, regions, and frontal organisations of the constituency were present. He added that both the MLA and the block president had been informed in advance.
According to Das, Khageswar Roy was attending another meeting and is currently busy with preparations for Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s visit to Maynaguri on March 24, where he is serving in his capacity as district chairman. He also mentioned that the block president was engaged elsewhere.
Das expressed confidence that the Trinamool Congress will secure all seven Assembly seats in the district, including Rajganj.
Meanwhile, Bharatiya Janata Party Rajganj constituency media convener Tapan Roy alleged that Khageswar Roy was denied a ticket due to the influence of Krishna Das. He claimed that the BJP is confident of winning the Rajganj seat, adding that the situation will become clearer once candidates are officially announced.
