Jalpaiguri, February 28 (Siliguri Chronicle) – Tension prevailed in Jalpaiguri on Saturday morning over the distribution of potato storage bonds at Bahadur Cold Storage under the Jalpaiguri Sadar block.
According to sources, hundreds of farmers gathered at the cold storage from the early hours to collect bonds required for storing their potatoes. As the crowd swelled, chaos broke out in the queue, with people pushing and jostling to secure their turn.
Police personnel rushed to the spot to control the situation. During the intervention, a scuffle reportedly took place between some farmers and the police. Amid the commotion, more than a hundred farmers allegedly broke the queue and entered the cold storage premises.
In view of the disorder, the authorities temporarily suspended the distribution of bonds. Agitating against the decision, farmers later staged a road blockade in the area, disrupting traffic for a brief period before the situation was brought under control.
