IMD Predicts Heavy Rain in Bengal Through Tuesday as Regional Depression Strengthens

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that light to moderate rain is likely at one or two places across all districts of south Bengal till Wednesday.

July 14, (Siliguri Chronicle) – A well-marked low-pressure area over southeast Gangetic West Bengal intensified into a depression on Monday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said. The system is expected to bring heavy to very heavy rain in one or two places across several districts of the state.

According to the IMD, the depression is likely to move west-northwestwards across Gangetic West Bengal by Tuesday afternoon.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy to very heavy rain at one or two places across all districts of south Bengal, with extremely heavy rainfall likely in South 24 Parganas, East Bardhaman, and West Bardhaman till Tuesday morning.

From Tuesday morning to Wednesday, light to moderate rain is expected in one or two places across the region. However, heavy rain is likely in Purulia, Bankura, East and West Bardhaman, Birbhum, and Murshidabad districts, the IMD said.

The weather office said that due to the prevailing system, north Bengal districts — including Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Malda, South Dinajpur, Cooch Behar, and Alipurduar — are likely to receive heavy rain at one or two places till Wednesday morning.

Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea along and off the West Bengal coast and the north Bay of Bengal, as sea conditions are expected to be rough to very rough, with wind speeds possibly reaching up to 60 kmph.
