Darjeeling, July 13 (Siliguri Chronicle) – Police seized over 200 grams of brown sugar and arrested one person during a routine check late Friday night.
A team from Sadar police station, led by sub-inspector Tirthapratim Roy, stopped a vehicle near Boksijhora on National Highway 110. During the search, officers recovered 202.05 grams of brown sugar—a heroin derivative—and a sum of cash.
The driver, Akhtar Khan, 45, a resident of Dr. Zakir Hussain Busty in Darjeeling, was taken into custody. Further investigation is underway.
“The seized narcotics, the cash and the other materials are approximately valued at ₹5 lakh,” said Praween Prakash, superintendent of police, Darjeeling.
Khan was taken into custody and produced before the special court in Darjeeling, which remanded him to seven days of police custody.
According to a police source, the operation was part of an ongoing anti-narcotics drive across the hills, launched in response to the rising influx of synthetic drugs and psychotropic substances from outside the region.
“With trafficking corridors becoming more active, especially along state borders, we have increased surveillance,” a senior police officer said.
The official added that Khan is suspected to be a courier for a drug network, and more arrests may follow as police work to trace the source and uncover links to larger syndicates.
