Phansidewa, 29 March (Siliguri Chronicle) – Tensions flared in Lahugachh village of Phansidewa after 609 voters’ names were found missing from two polling booths, triggering protests and a road blockade by angry residents.
The issue concerns booths 223 and 224 under the Phansidewa Assembly constituency, which together have 1,533 registered voters. The controversy came to light following the release of the supplementary voter list, leading to widespread anger among locals.
Residents alleged that earlier, more than 700 voters had been marked as “under consideration” even after the publication of the full voter list. Now, 609 names have reportedly been removed entirely, deepening concerns and frustration in the area.
The situation has created a sense of fear and resentment among voters, many of whom questioned the role of the Election Commission. Protesters took to the streets and blocked the state road to voice their anger.
Among those affected are current and former panchayat members, their family members, and several other residents. A local panchayat representative claimed that their name, which had been on the voter list since 2002, was removed despite having land documents dating back to 1987. Allegations were also raised that names of minority voters were selectively deleted.
Protesters have warned that if the voter list is not corrected soon, they will intensify their agitation with a larger movement in the coming days.
