Siliguri, December 26 (Siliguri Chronicle) – Siliguri witnessed protests on Thursday as members of the Bangiya Hindu Mahamancha demonstrated against the killing of Hindus and alleged atrocities targeting the Hindu community in Bangladesh. The protest was held outside the Sonali Bank branch at Panitanki More, where demonstrators raised slogans and expressed concern over the situation across the border.
After staging a protest in front of the visa office, activists of the Bangiya Hindu Mahamancha later took out a procession from Pakurtala More to Panitanki More. Anticipating possible unrest, the police deployed a heavy security presence outside the Sonali Bank branch.
Tension escalated when protesters attempted to intensify the agitation, resulting in a scuffle between police personnel and activists of the Bangiya Hindu Mahamancha. During the demonstration, the protesters burnt an effigy of Muhammad Yunus, head of Bangladesh’s interim government, in front of the bank.
Speaking on the occasion, Bikramaditya Mondal, a member of the advisory committee of the Bangiya Hindu Mahamancha, alleged that while police were providing security to Sonali Bank, atrocities against Hindus in Bangladesh were continuing. He asserted that the organisation would not allow the situation to persist and warned that the agitation would continue until the safety of Hindus in Bangladesh was ensured.
Mondal also claimed that the organisation had submitted appeals at various medical institutions as part of the protest, seeking wider support and attention to the issue.
