4,500 Bottles of Banned Cough Syrup Seized in Fulbari, Three Held in Major Crackdown

Acting on a tip-off, NJP Police intercepted a goods vehicle near Fulbari and recovered 4,500 bottles of banned cough syrup worth several lakh rupees, arresting three persons.

Fulbari, 30 May (Siliguri Chronicle) – In a major crackdown on illegal drug trafficking, New Jalpaiguri Police seized around 4,500 bottles of banned cough syrup from a small goods vehicle near Jiaganj, adjacent to Fulbari on the Siliguri-Jalpaiguri National Highway, late on Friday night. Three persons were arrested in connection with the incident.

According to police sources, the operation was carried out following a specific tip-off. A police team conducted a raid in the area and intercepted the vehicle. During the search, officers recovered 30 cartons containing the banned cough syrup.

The arrested accused have been identified as Alok Kundu of Hakimpara in Siliguri, vehicle driver Prasenjit Mukherjee, and assistant driver Surajit Haldar, both residents of Howrah.

Preliminary investigation suggests that the consignment was allegedly being transported to Siliguri for smuggling purposes. The estimated market value of the seized cough syrup is said to be several lakh rupees.

Police have registered a case under relevant sections of law and produced the accused before the Jalpaiguri district court on Saturday.
