Naxalbari, January 06 (Siliguri Chronicle) – In a shocking incident, thieves broke into the house of former soldier Hom Bahadur Chhetri at Tarabari village near the India–Nepal border and fled with gold and silver ornaments along with cash worth several lakhs of rupees.
According to reports, the incident took place early on Tuesday morning. At the time, Hom Bahadur Chhetri was outside feeding his livestock, while his wife was asleep inside the house. Taking advantage of the situation, the miscreants entered the house and opened an almirah, from which they allegedly stole around 16 bhori of gold ornaments, about half a kilogram of silver ornaments, and ₹2.75 lakh in cash.
The theft came to light when the former soldier returned inside and noticed the valuables missing. He immediately informed the police.
Officers from Naxalbari Police Station reached the spot after receiving the information and began an initial inquiry. Hom Bahadur Chhetri alleged that the thieves had carried out prior reconnaissance before committing the crime and appealed to the police to arrest those responsible at the earliest.
Reacting to the incident, Sajani Subba, Saha-Sabhapati of the Naxalbari Panchayat Samiti, said incidents of theft have been reported frequently in the area and demanded increased police patrolling to ensure residents’ safety.
Meanwhile, Naxalbari police have registered a case and launched a detailed investigation into the incident.
