Siliguri, January 25 (Siliguri Chronicle) – In response to a rise in road accidents, the Siliguri Metropolitan Police have introduced three new traffic regulations, which came into effect from Sunday. The measures are aimed at improving road safety and easing congestion on major city roads, including the Eastern Bypass.
According to the Traffic Department, the new rules focus on regulating the movement of dumpers and other medium and heavy vehicles. These include revised operating hours for goods vehicles, a complete daytime and evening ban on dumpers within the city, and the implementation of several route diversions for freight traffic.
DCP (Traffic) Quazi Samsuddin Ahamed said the regulations were finalised after detailed monitoring and assessment of traffic patterns in Siliguri and along the Eastern Bypass, in line with the directions of Police Commissioner C Sudhakar.
Under the new system, medium and large goods vehicles are allowed to use the Eastern Bypass only during night hours, between 10.00 pm and 8.00 am. Their movement has been restricted for a total of nine hours in a day, with no entry permitted from 9.00 am to 12.00 noon and from 3.00 pm to 9.00 pm.
Within Siliguri city limits, dumpers have been barred from operating during daytime and evening hours. In addition, heavy and goods vehicles will not be allowed on several key routes between 8.00 am and 10.00 pm. These routes include Bhaktinagar Checkpost to Panitanki More, Airview More and Venus More, Ghogomali More to Court More, Jhankar More to Matigara Hospital Road, and Champasari More to Gulma Railway Station Road.
The Traffic Department has also designated separate routes for medium and large goods vehicles entering the city, as well as for vehicles travelling towards the hills via Matigara–Khaprail and the Checkpost. External goods vehicles have been directed to use specific routes through the Eastern Bypass and Naukaghat More.
Appealing for public cooperation, DCP Ahamed urged citizens and transport operators to strictly follow the new traffic regulations to ensure smoother traffic flow and enhanced road safety across Siliguri.
