Siliguri, January 01 (Siliguri Chronicle) – A young man in Siliguri was arrested for allegedly impersonating an Army officer and maintaining contact with several foreign nationals, including suspected links with Pakistan.The accused has been identified as Bhavesh Ghatani.
According to sources, he had aspired to join the Indian Army since childhood but failed to clear the entrance examinations multiple times. Investigators said that he later began posing as an Army officer, often moving around in military uniform.
The arrest was made late on Wednesday night at a mall in the Matigara area, where Ghatani, a resident of Darjeeling, was seen moving around in full Army uniform.
On Thursday, the accused was produced before a Siliguri court, following which he was taken into custody by Matigara police for further investigation.
Army intelligence sources confirmed that Ghatani not only wore an Army uniform but had also fabricated a fake Army identity card. Both the uniform and the forged ID were seized during the operation.
Police said that his actions were driven by a strong desire to join the Army, and that he created the uniform and documents to falsely project himself as a serving soldier.
Investigations by Army intelligence also revealed several suspicious phone numbers stored on his mobile handset, with at least two of them reportedly linked to Pakistan. Authorities are now probing the nature and extent of these contacts to determine whether the case is connected to any larger conspiracy.
