Siliguri, January 03 (Siliguri Chronicle) – For the first time, the Friendship Cup 2026 cricket tournament was organised in Siliguri by Aamra Sobai Surya Sen Sporting Club in association with the Kanai Lal Sen Foundation. The event has drawn an enthusiastic response from both players and local residents, creating a festive sporting atmosphere in the city.
According to the organisers, a total of eight teams are participating in the competition. Siliguri Deputy Mayor Ranjan Sarkar attended the inauguration ceremony and formally flagged off the tournament. Despite being held for the first time, the Friendship Cup 2026 has received an encouraging response from various sections of society.
Club president Tandab Mukherjee said teams from different organisations and social backgrounds are participating in the tournament. He noted that the event has grown beyond a cricket competition to become a platform for promoting friendship, unity and social harmony. The organisers also expressed hope of expanding the tournament on a larger scale in the coming years.
Deputy Mayor Ranjan Sarkar said such sporting initiatives play an important role in encouraging the younger generation to take up sports. He also stated that plans are underway to further develop Valmiki Ground, making it more suitable and better equipped for sporting activities in the future.
