Rajganj, December 26 (Siliguri Chronicle) – Road construction work in Rajganj was halted on Thursday after local residents staged a protest, alleging that the project was not being executed in line with their stated demands.
According to reports, the road is being constructed under the Pathashree-4 project from Motagachh to Chairikhari in the Majhiali Gram Panchayat area of Rajganj block. Local residents alleged that the proposed width of the road was inadequate and stopped the work in protest.
Local residents said the proposed road, stretching from Motagachh on the Ambari–Hathi More State Highway to Karatoya Ghat and linked to the Upanayan of Panchanan Barma, is too narrow in the current design. They expressed concern that this could lead to long-term difficulties for vehicular movement and daily commuting.
Residents said they had repeatedly approached the administration seeking a wider and improved road, but construction work began without their concerns being addressed.
Local resident Karunakanta Adhikari said they were not opposed to development but were seeking a lasting solution. “We want the road to be constructed in a way that addresses long-standing problems. A narrow road will only inconvenience common people,” he said, adding that several representations had been submitted demanding a wider road.
Responding to the issue, Rajganj joint BDO Sourav Kanti Mondal said over the phone that no official complaint had been received so far. He added that once a formal complaint is submitted, the matter would be forwarded to the appropriate authorities for necessary action.
