Siliguri, 20 March (Siliguri Chronicle) – Tension flared up between rival political parties in Ward No. 03 of the Siliguri Municipal Corporation on Thursday night over the issue of poster placement.
The situation escalated after posters carrying the message “Boycott BJP” appeared in the area. Allegedly put up under the initiative of Ward Councillor Ram Bhajan Mahato, the posters drew strong objections from BJP workers. They questioned the absence of any mention of who had put up the posters, which led to a heated argument between BJP supporters and the TMC councillor along with party workers.
As the confrontation intensified, police personnel reached the spot and brought the situation under control.
Later in the night, the controversial posters were removed following a complaint lodged by the BJP with the Election Commission.
Reacting to the incident, Siliguri BJP candidate Shankar Ghosh said that a formal complaint would be filed at the police station against Councillor Ram Bhajan Mahato and TMC workers. He alleged that the Trinamool Congress was deliberately trying to create unrest in the area.
However, Councillor Ram Bhajan Mahato dismissed the allegations, claiming that the BJP candidate was apprehensive about a possible defeat in the upcoming elections and that the party was attempting to create unnecessary tension through its own workers.
