Naxalbari, December 31 (Siliguri Chronicle) – Work on a crematorium in Bir Singh village under the Hatighisa Gram Panchayat of Naxalbari began on the last day of December, following an application submitted in August at the ‘Amader Para Amader Samadhan’ camp. Notably, this marks the first time since Independence that the village will have a crematorium, ending a long-standing civic deprivation for local residents.
The foundation stone for the crematorium was laid the same day by Naxalbari Panchayat Samiti Sabhapati Ananda Ghosh. With construction now underway, a long-pending hardship faced by residents of Bir Singh Jote, Ketugabur Jote, Bhelta Jote and four other neighbouring villages is expected to be resolved, bringing much-needed civic relief to the area.
Local residents welcomed the start of the project with visible satisfaction. Addressing the gathering, Naxalbari Panchayat Samiti Sabhapati Ananda Ghosh said the crematorium work was initiated in response to a long-standing demand of the villagers, assuring timely completion of the project.
Ghosh added that the ‘Amader Para Amader Samadhan’ initiative has enabled villagers to take an active role in addressing their own civic issues. He further said that the Chief Minister has earmarked ₹10 lakh for development in each booth under the programme, strengthening grassroots infrastructure and public participation.
