Siliguri, December 28 (Siliguri Chronicle) – Panic gripped Siliguri late Saturday night after burglars targeted a jewellery store on Hill Cart Road, in yet another incident of theft in the busy area.
According to sources, the burglary came to light on Sunday morning when a shop employee arrived to open the store and noticed signs of a break-in. The miscreants reportedly gained entry by breaking through a wall and escaped with around 30 kg of silver and an estimated 100 to 200 grams of gold.
Although the miscreants attempted to cut open the shop’s locker, they failed to remove the gold stored inside. The burglars also took away the DVR box of the CCTV cameras installed in the shop, apparently in an attempt to evade identification.
Siliguri police rushed to the spot after being informed and have launched an investigation. CCTV footage from nearby areas is being scrutinised to identify those involved in the crime.
The shop owner said the theft was discovered when an employee arrived to open the store on Sunday morning. He confirmed that jewellery and other valuables worth several lakhs of rupees had been stolen.
A spate of thefts on Hill Cart Road has left local traders anxious, raising serious concerns about security in the area.
