Siliguri, December 12 (Siliguri Chronicle) – Allegations against a doctor at Siliguri District Hospital of slapping a patient have triggered outrage on the premises. The incident unfolded on Thursday when Mou Mandal arrived at the hospital with complaints of breathing distress.
Her family members alleged that the attending doctor dismissed the condition as non-serious and advised her to go home. Moments after leaving, Mou’s condition reportedly deteriorated, prompting her family to rush her back to the hospital, where she was admitted to the observation ward.
Mou’s family members alleged that the doctor physically assaulted her during treatment and behaved in an inhumane manner under the pretext of providing medical care. The accusation sparked protests by the patient’s relatives inside the hospital, leading to a tense atmosphere until Siliguri Police intervened to restore order.
The family maintained that such conduct from a doctor entrusted with patient safety was unacceptable. The accused doctor, however, refuted the claims, insisting that no slap was delivered and that the patient’s condition was not critical.
He further claimed that Mou had underlying psychological issues and that actions such as offering water and encouraging her to move were routine components of standard medical care, or the “line of treatment.” Hospital authorities, along with Siliguri Police, have launched an inquiry into the episode. The administration has stated that appropriate action will be taken if the investigation confirms any misconduct by the doctor.
