Siliguri, July 18 (Siliguri Chronicle) – The Calcutta High Court on Thursday directed the Bengal police to allow the BJP to hold its planned march to Uttarkanya, the branch secretariat in Siliguri, on July 21. However, the court set certain conditions for the procession to take place.
The BJP approached the court after the state police and administration refused permission for the rally, citing that the Trinamool Congress would be holding its Martyrs’ Day event in Calcutta on the same day.
Justice Tirthankar Ghosh of the Calcutta High Court on Thursday directed the Bengal police to allow the BJP’s rally in Siliguri.
In his order, the judge said the rally must be limited to 10,000 participants. The march will begin from Tinbatti More, a key junction on Asian Highway 48 in southern Siliguri, and conclude at a ground in Chunabhati near Uttarkanya.
“The judge has also said the organisers will have to ensure that no untoward and unlawful incident will occur during the rally, and in such a case, they will be held responsible. He has also directed the administration to deploy an adequate police force to maintain peace during the rally,” said a source.
The rally, to be organised by the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), was announced by Suvendu Adhikari, leader of the Opposition in the Assembly. It aims to protest against several issues concerning the Mamata Banerjee-led government, including alleged corruption and a worsening law and order situation.
Following the court’s directive, the BJP expressed relief over the clearance to hold the march.
“Thankful to the Hon’ble Calcutta High Court for permitting BJYM’s #UttarKanyaCholo protest march and sabha at #Siliguri on July 21, 2025, and safeguarding the rights of the opposition to protest in West Bengal,” Indranil Khan, the state president of the BJYM, wrote on his X handle.
Suvendu Adhikari said BJP workers would gather at Tinbatti More at 11am, and the march would proceed to Chunabhati Ground near Uttarkanya.
